If only we could meet tonight
If only we could meet tonight
by Naqi Haider
Apart for 1,400 years years
different cities, cultures, scripts and letters
separated by oceans of time and memory
If only we could meet tonight
If only we could meet tonight
I would walk until these feet
were blistered and broken
drive down every abandoned street
not once, but twice
Decipher the meaning of every verse and ever word
untangling all human complexity, only
compounded with the migration
of each heartbeat across this page
All of creation
is already within the heart of Muhammad
his compassion is not limited to one faith
his mercy is not restricted by place
his love is not trapped by time or memory
even in the absence of light
where nothing can be seen
there is mercy upon mercy
light upon light
truth upon truth
there is Muhammad
If only we could meet tonight
I would swim the seven seas
bend the laws of time itself
and travel the universe on a breeze
If we could meet by the Kaaba
Bricks laid by Abraham’s hands
Walls raised by Ishmael
Birth place of, the gate
of the city of knowledge
A house that has seen, and will see
tribes, nations and governments
rise and fall
rise and fall
If only we could meet tonight
where every step and every and every breath
there is mercy upon mercy
light upon light
there is Muhammad
If only we could meet tonight
to end the anguish of today
unburden my heart
will the things I have to say
Zanib is in Damascus
and the Imam is in chains
Sakina is no more, and Yazid is to blame
they hunted your family, and even the tents are aflame
The world is very different
And there is much to explain
If only we could meet tonight
I would crawl to Abyssinia
prostrate on my knees
keep the Qibla in my heart
and the Quran as the key
If the Hijra was only steps away
In Medina I would stand
looking on from Yathraib
Until at Ghadeer
I could see you raising Ali’s hand
Bilal would affirm and
the world would understand
And if this solitude
is to last and eternity, or two
And you start searching for your
true followers who are few
you will find me waiting
on Karbala’s sands
with my feet firmly placed
and the flag of Abbas in my hands
if only we could meet tonight
to end the exile of today
I could unburden my heart
will all the things, I need to say
All of creation is already in your hands
Compassion is not limited to places where we stand
Mercy is not restricted, but a burden to understand
And love is not trapped by time in grains fo desert sand
if only we could meet tonight
break the silence of today
Ya Mustafa, Ya Muhammad
Is all I could say
